But our technicians at VR-Junkies.com have found a simple solution that works with all apps.

As mentioned before, our technicians from VR-Junkies found a simple solution on how to retrofit a magnetic trigger. Although it is not the most elegant solution, rather a “life-hack”, but it works very, very pleasant.
How does the magnetic trigger of VR headsets work?
We have thought that a VR headset’s magnetic switch does nothing else than to let a magnetic field interact with your smartphone. The built-in compass in the smartphone makes it possible to register magnetic changes as an interaction. Therefore, magnetic triggers work as they do. This means, if you just bring a magnet to the back of your smartphone, an interaction arises. Simples principle, simple solution.
In our test, we have begun with magnetic magnets, which work generally good as VR glasses magnetic triggers. They work better without the headset, but if you place the smartphone in your VR headset, the magnetic field between smartphone and magnet becomes too weak. We then moved to a slightly stronger magnet for magnetic boards. This worked perfectly. This is how it works:

What you need now is a magnet. Start with a slightly weaker one, such as a refrigerator magnet.
CAUTION: Do not use excessive magnets, which can damage your smartphone!
- Do not put your smartphone in your VR glasses yet: You must first find out where the magnet on the smartphone works best.
- Launch a VR app on your smartphone: Launch a VR app that requires a click to interact, such as: Google Cardboard App.
- Goals with the smartphone on a button in the VR APP: Now move the cursor over a button in the app. In the case of the Google Cardboard app, this is the white dot, for example. Position this white dot over a button.
- Now carefully bring the magnet closer to the back of your smartphone: The approach of the magnet is basically the same as if you were using the VR switch on the magnetic switch. Then move the magnet away again. If the smartphone does not respond, try to “touch” the back of your smartphone with the magnet until you find the right spot where the compass sits in your smartphone.
- Remember where the magnet works best: you found the right spot? Very good!
- Put the smartphone in your VR glasses.
- Now move the magnet to the place where an interaction previously worked.
- It does not work? Try a stronger magnet (CAUTION: As mentioned earlier, you should not use too strong a magnet, as this may damage your smartphone.)
Those who are now ready to do handicrafts can attach the magnet to a metal spring and then attach glasses to the VR. This results in a device whereby the magnetic switch is easily replaced. Note: You should be aware of how to insert your smartphone. In most cases, the magnetic sensor is located below the smartphone. If you now turn your smartphone over, the magnet on the previously placed point of course no longer has any effect.
Why is the magnetic switch missing on so many VR glasses?
When Google released its production instructions for manufacturers of VR glasses, there was no magnetic switch in the first version. The control of the apps was then still solved differently. Many manufacturers have produced many of their own VR glasses at that time. The production was perfected to build high volumes of this variant without magnetic switch. Suddenly came the Google Cardboard 2.0. Suddenly, this has been extended by a feature: A magnetic switch should increase the VR experience.
Here’s the problem: Google has also adapted its Cardboard app on this magnet switch. Now you could suddenly stop serving the Google Cardboard app with most VR glasses. What a pity. Nevertheless, manufacturers still have VR glasses produced without magnetic switches.
Meanwhile, the use of magnetic switches from Google is no longer recommended. We can well imagine why: For many VR glasses that have integrated a magnetic switch, the switch did not work after some time. Presumably, this phenomenon arises because the strength of the magnet in the magnetic switches decreases over time and thus no effect can be achieved when switching.
Cardboard magnetic switch stops working
We’ve also heard reports from a number of times that magnetic solenoids no longer work on some VR goggles. With our tip, you can also use a magnet here.
The best way is with the good old remote control
No matter what experience we have made so far, the simplest and most comfortable solution were still remote controls: VR glasses remote control
The latest VR goggles do not have VR glasses magnetic switches, but switches that work with NFC. In times like these, every smartphone should actually have an NFC sensor. Google recommends VR eyewear manufacturers to stop using magnetic switches.
