Oculus Quest – the “all-in-one gaming headset”. Oculus has brought VR headset onto the market that finally eliminate the need for a computer or smartphone. Here you can find out what VR headsets are good for.
VR headsets have always been a bit tedious up to now. Either you needed expensive VR headsets and an incredibly powerful gaming PC, which was relatively expensive, or you just use your smartphone, put it in VR headsets (better said a VR case) and can comfortably watch VR movies watch high quality or enjoy one or the other VR game.
If you’re interested in VR with smartphones, here’s how it works: This is how VR works with smartphones .
Oculus Quest specifications and features at a glance:
Display resolution: 1600 x 1440 per eye
Refresh rate: 72 Hz
Display technology: OLED
Viewing angle: 90 °
Weight: 570 grams
Audio: Loudspeakers on the VR headset (no headphones)
No PC necessary (Standalone VR headset), therefore no cables
Very easy setup (You only need the headset, no desktop application etc.)
No tracking basestations necessary (Tracking cameras directly in the VR headset)
All-in-one VR – no computer required
Isn’t it a great feeling to be cordless? One of the biggest disadvantages at the moment is precisely the cables that have to hang from the VR headset to your PC. With the Oculus Quest you don’t need a PC and you can plunge into the VR experience, no matter where you are.
But what’s really great: Alternatively, you can hang the Oculus Quest on a PC and enjoy more elaborate VR games.
Or use your gaming PC with Oculus Link too!
You can’t decide whether you are going to take an Oculus Quest, with which you can immerse yourself in the VR world regardless of the PC, or whether you prefer to use the Oculus Rift S, which you can use in combination with your gaming PC reach the highest level of VR experience?
No problem: just use the Oculus Quest with your gaming PC!
With “Oculus Link”, Oculus has created a way to easily use your gaming PC with the Oculus Quest VR headset. Connect your VR headset to your PC using the fast USB 3.0 cable and you can use the Oculus desktop app with the Oculus Quest VR headset .
So far, however, there have been minor delays in operation, which can be a minor disadvantage when playing fast-paced games.
There are of course disadvantages
Of course, no PC doesn’t mean great performance either. On the size of VR headset, you can roughly compare it to the performance of a powerful smartphone. Of course, this also means that you cannot play the games with the best graphics (unless you connect them to the PC of course, then it is possible).
The refresh rate or frames is only 72 Hz. Still better than the 60 Hz of the PlayStation VR, but unfortunately behind the models like Oculus Rift S (80 Hz) or Valve Index (120 Hz | 144 Hz).
Tracking the Oculus Quest
Sensors are built into the VR headset themselves that recognize your surroundings and, based on this, transfer your movements into virtual reality.
It has 6DOF tracking. This means that it recognizes in which direction you are looking and whether you are moving forwards, backwards, sideways, upwards and downwards. So basically, you could move around on foot completely.
With the “Guardian-System” you first go to the places in your apartment where you have free space. The VR headset recognizes that.
Hand Tracking – Another feature of Oculus Quest
Furthermore, the VR headset supports “hand tracking”, so your hands can be tracked directly in front of the VR headset, even individual fingers. You don’t even need a controller anymore. But: The cameras have to see your hands, of course, which means that it only works right in front of the VR headset. Well, and unfortunately it doesn’t work that well yet.
Other things about the Oculus Quest
You can watch on a smartphone what the person with the VR headset is seeing at that moment. It’s a lot of fun when there are several people in the room.
In addition, you can actually take the Oculus Quest with you anywhere. If it gets boring on vacation or on visits (especially the children) you can keep them occupied for 2 to 4 hours with this VR headset. Or you take them to friends’ homes for fun. The “film evenings” can now easily become VR evenings.
Conclusion
The Oculust Quest is definitely not a substitute for premium VR headsets. In view of the price of around € 500 to € 600, it is still a lot cheaper than a combination of premium VR headset and a gaming PC. This means that this VR headset is more suitable for those who want to watch a VR movie in an uncomplicated way and want to enjoy a VR game from time to time.
In any case, the headset ist fun when several people can watch on a smartphone what the person with the VR headset is seeing at that moment.
The Oculust Quest VR headset takes a different approach than many of the premium VR headsets currently available such as Valve Index.
Above all, the ease of use is a great strength of the Oculus Quest – you don’t need a PC, no cables, no additional software on the PC. You unpack your headset and you can actually start right away. And best of all: you can simply take the VR headset with you wherever you go.
