Stand-alone and connection to PC possible. Higher resolution (higher than Valve Index), better display, lighter, faster – The Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2 brings some improvements over its predecessor. One can only say good things about the Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2 for its price.

The Meta Quest 2 (formerly “Oculus Quest 2”) comes with pleasant upgrades compared to the previous model.

  • Better processor
  • Lighter
  • Higher resolution (LCD instead of OLED – no “grid” visible)
  • Less blurring with fast movements
  • It’s even cheaper than the first Oculus Quest
  • 90 Hz (supplied with an update)

The display has a sharper screen (1832 × 1920px per eye instead of 1600×1440 px, which is even more than the Valve Index ). What’s also noticeable – The Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2 uses an LCD screen instead of an OLED screen. With this LCD display, the effect of the afterglow (blurring of the image when moving quickly) is reduced so that it is more fluid than with OLED. You only accept the deep black values of an OLED display, but provide a smoother experience, which is very positive overall. This is also confirmed by John Carmack (former boss at ID-Software, who now works on Oculus and Meta):

The refresh rate is 90 Hz – which is pretty smooth. You can also switch to 120 Hz in the experimental settings. It should be noted, however, that it is a beta setting, is not supported by all software and that the battery consumption increases.

There are 2 variants, one with 64 GB and one with 265 GB memory, the difference is around 100 €. The upgrade to the 265GB version is well worth the money in our opinion. One battery charge lasts approx. 2 to 3 hours, the VR Headset recharge to 100% in approx. 2 to 3 hours.

With the “Guardian system” or a security system so that you do not run into anywhere in the apartment, it works very easily. You draw a marker on the floor in the VR app and thus know how far you can go (accidents have happened in the past and have often happened – ran into the table, etc.). This system helps to better protect yourself and your home 🙂

In the pack you can expect:

  • The Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2
  • Headset spacers
  • USB-C charging cable ( you get that here * )
  • Controller with straps

What is a bit confusing and annoying: You need a Facebook account and have to connect it to the Oculus app via a smartphone. The reasons for this are that better “data security” is guaranteed. That sounds extremely strange. In addition, all game purchases are tied to the Facebook account. Facebook could have solved that better.

No tracking stations necessary

Unlike other VR glasses, for which you have to set up base stations or tracking stations in the room, the Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2 does everything with internal cameras.

No PC necessary

The Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2 features a Qualcomm® Snapdragon XR2 and 6GB RAM specially designed for Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. The games are of course graphically not extremely bombastic when operated without a PC, but for a stand-alone device this is very okay, which can be displayed for both eyes at a relatively high resolution (1832 × 1920px per eye). In addition, many developers have upgraded their games graphically for the Oculus Quest 2 so that you can of course enjoy better graphics than on the Oculus Quest 1.

But what is extremely cool is that you can take the Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2 with you anywhere and anytime. You do not depend on your PC and its location, you can also switch to another room or even take the VR Headset to friends.

But can be connected to the PC (Oculus Link)

The Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2 can be connected to the PC via “Oculus Link”, which allows games with higher performance requirements to be played via a USB cable (Of course, depending on the performance of the PC, it is best to use a powerful gaming-PC can call his own). What else you need: A fairly long USB-C cable (you can find it here: Meta Quest / Oculus Quest USB cable*)

Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2 Conclusion

It’s actually extremely impressive how much you get with the Meta Quest 2 / Oculus Quest 2. You can use it stand-alone without a PC, but you can also connect it to a PC and play graphically elaborate top titles. Tracking works great without base stations. It has a 90 Hz display, high resolution and a platform (Oculus) that is heavily supported. The only drawback is the connection to Facebook. If you can handle that, the Oculus Quest 2 is a miracle VR headset.
