The Samsung Galaxy A50 does a corresponding job for a mid-range cell phone. With 4 GB of RAM, an Exynos 9610 (10nm) chipset and a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU, it is not the top smartphone, but it is completely sufficient for normal tasks. Even most games run pretty smoothly. The long battery life and the existing headphone jack are pleasing. The display is a lively AMOLED, but it only has a pixel density of around 403 ppi. The Samsung Galaxy A50 is available with 128 GB of memory, whereby the memory can be expanded with a microSD card.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 – another smartphone from the A series (Samsung’s mid-range smartphones, i.e. cheaper variants). How good is the smartphone? Where were compromises made?

Samsung Galaxy A50 – affordable price where savings have been made

With the cheaper A variant of the Galaxy smartphones, you always have to save somewhere in order to achieve the low price. For example, the case of the A50 is plastic instead of glass. Nevertheless, it looks very high quality because it has a special coating that changes the color slightly depending on the viewing angle. Unfortunately, you can feel that it is plastic. There is no button for Bixby on the A50, but you can hold down the power button for a longer time.

It doesn’t have IP verification either, so it hasn’t been certified for water and dust resistance. A certificate costs extra, it does not have to mean that it is not waterproof and dustproof at all (it is better not to try it out).

For the performance 4 GB RAM, an Exynos 9610 (10nm) chipset and a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU were installed. With the relatively low resolution or pixel density of 403 ppi, this ensures enough performance and a smooth experience during normal use. Even most games run completely smoothly. The battery is 4000 mAh and, in combination with the aforementioned specs, ensures a very long battery life of approx. 100 hours with normal use. The Samsung Galaxy A50 is available with 128 GB of memory, whereby the memory can be expanded with a microSD card.

Samsung Galaxy A50 display – as expected

The AMOLED display impresses with its relatively bright display with 420 nits. In contrast to the Galaxy S10, the Galaxy A50 has no rounded edges, but has a completely flat display. This feature has turned out to be a matter of taste anyway and cannot be viewed as a negative.

At the very top of the display there is a small “tear drop” instead of a “punch hole” as in the Galaxy S10, which is also a matter of taste, so not a real disadvantage. As with the S10, there is a fingerprint scanner in the display, but it is quite slow. On the other hand, Face-Unlock works pretty quickly.

As expected, a cheaper smartphone does not have a high-quality display. The display is 6.4 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. Unfortunately, this only results in a pixel density of 403 ppi or, relative to 6 inches, that would be 430 ppi. (You can find out why pixel density is so important here: VR glasses resolution .)

Samsung Galaxy A50 – the sound

Unfortunately, the Galaxy A50 only has one speaker on the bottom. So there is no stereo sound. On the other hand, it is quite loud, although the high frequencies do not sound very nice and sometimes overmodulation can occur.

What is very nice these days: It has a headphone jack.

Very strong camera equipment

The camera equipment of the Galaxy A50 is accordingly for a smartphone in the middle price range. It consists of 3 cameras: 25 MP main camera, 8 MP wide-angle camera and a 5 MP depth sensor for portrait mode.

The colors and contrast are very good, but the sharpness of the photos becomes very artificial every now and then. In the evening or in the dark, the photos are quite OK, whereas the wide-angle photos look very bad. But the selfies are surprisingly good.

Videos can be recorded with full HD and 30 fps.

Is the Galaxy A50 suitable for VR?

The performance of the Galaxy A50 would even be halfway sufficient for smooth experiences, including the AMOLED display with its vivid colors. Unfortunately, the resolution and therefore the pixel density is rather low. At 403 ppi (or 430 ppi on 6 inches) a really sharp image cannot be displayed. (You can find out why pixel density is so important here: VR headset resolution .)
