Huawei P30 Lite - the Lite version is next to the P30 and P30 Pro the cheapest model, which unfortunately also means that it is the weaker of the 3 models. Overall, the camera and equipment are still very good, given the low price. Unfortunately, this smartphone is less suitable for virtual reality, since it only has an LCD display and the contrasts and resolution do not ensure a very good VR experience.

Huawei P30 Lite – the Lite version is next to the P30 and P30 Pro the cheapest model, which unfortunately also means that it is the weaker of the 3 models. Can the P30 Lite convince despite various drawbacks? Are the camera, design and equipment at the highest level and can the smartphone be used for virtual reality? We take a closer look at the smartphone.

Huawei P30 Pro – strong design, strong features

Like its predecessor, the Huawei P20 Lite, the Huawei P30 Lite again impresses with a strong all-screen design, even if the edges are a bit larger compared to the Pro version. With the Huawei P30 Lite, too, the button at the bottom of the display is dropped, which was relatively difficult to access anyway and is now redundant.

Even the back of the display of the Lite version shimmers just like that of the normal or Pro version. The Huawei P30 Lite is also an eye-catcher and by no means looks cheap.

The Huawei P30 Lite has 128 GB of memory and can be expanded by up to 512 GB with an SD card. In comparison to the PRO version, the Kirin 780 was not installed in the Lite version, but the Kirin 710. This is noticeable in benchmarks and hardware-hungry games; the differences are only slightly noticeable when used in everyday life. The battery can convince with its 3340 mAh and lasts about 15 hours with normal use.

Display: “Only” LCD “and as usual from Huawei – low pixel density

As usual, Huawei also equips the P30, P30 Pro and P30 Lite with a relatively low pixel density. With the Huawei P30 Lite, of course, you have to save somewhere and there is usually a lot to save on the display. The Lite version only uses an LCD display, in which the contrast and colors look less beautiful than the OLED displays. With its 1080×2312 LCD display pixel density of 415 ppi, the contents are relatively clear to read, but when you take a closer look and for a VR experience, this is unfortunately a bit too little. In comparison: Galaxy S10 + has 550 ppi, the Galaxy S9 + has 529 ppi (1440p).

Otherwise, the colors of the LCD display are unfortunately a little paler compared to the OLED, especially the black values of LCD can unfortunately not be very deep. In the sun, the contents can be seen quite OK. At the top of the display there is a small notch right in the middle, which comes more like a drop, as the Oneplus 6T has shown.

The fingerprint scanner is located on the back of the smartphone.

Huawei P30 Lite – the sound

So that the display is even bigger, Huawei has removed the traditional speakers and generates the sound via vibrations below the display, unfortunately there are no stereo speakers for watching videos or listening to music. The sound only comes from a speaker on the bottom of the smartphone. It’s very good, but stereo is inevitable for some people.

Unfortunately there is no speaker connection, which means you have to use an adapter.

Very strong camera equipment, but not a Leica

The P30 Pro is mainly praised for its powerful camera equipment. The Huawei P30 Lite uses 3 cameras, but not from Leica. Nevertheless, the photos are convincing, even in poor light conditions.

Is the Huawei P30 Lite suitable for VR?

The Huawei P30 Lite is also not ideal for VR. The LCD display also provides poorer contrast and “blurring” because it does not react as quickly as an OLED display. The overall performance is ok for VR. It is not daydream-ready though, but you’ll be able to view all cardboard and other VR content.
